History of Champs

The initial idea of CHAMPS was birthed on the seas en route to Honduras in August 2015 at a meeting convened by a group of past students representing the Classes of 1979 and 1980 from Cayon High School. These students went cruising as part of a class reunion and assembled in a small cabin where they discussed a multiplicity of ways in which they could make a significant contribution to the lives of students at Cayon High School. Deliberations were narrowed down to a mentorship programme and alumni activities. The goal was to embrace as many past students who would be willing to contribute to their alma mater through the establishment of the mentorship programme.
The name C.H.A.M.P.S. which meant Cayon High Alumni and Mentorship Programme for Students evolved in the ensuing year August 2016 when the group forged ahead with plans to celebrate its first anniversary under the leadership of first president, Lloyd Grant. A competition was launched at the Cayon High School in the first term of December 2016 to solicit the participation of the students in designing a logo for the group. By 2017, the winner of the competition was Miss Azania Alexander, a third-form student who hailed from the Lodge Project area. In August 2017, CHAMPS was able to celebrate its second anniversary with its members and proud alumni and the accomplishment of its logo.
CHAMPS regular visits to the school
In 2018, CHAMPS has been making regular visits to the school to participate in alumni activities by making various donations to the school including back-to-school supplies, a large monitor, a telephone, a large refrigerator and care packages to community members from Keys Village to Lodge Project.
From 2018 to 2019, CHAMPS held various mentorship sessions with visiting Crime Prevention Specialists from Canada, Dr. Neale Chitan and Mrs. Michele de la Coudray Blake from the Basseterre Centre for Mental Health. Training in mentorship was to equip the members of CHAMPS with the necessary training in readiness to embark on its mentorship programme at the Cayon High School.
